Three areas, three different weeks

Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios are all on Jamaica's north coast, and they make quite different holidays.

Eat off the property at least twice

Oxtail with rice and peas, jerk pork and chicken off a roadside drum, fruit that never sees a plane, and ackee and saltfish for breakfast. Jamaica has a national dish, a jerk tradition and a patty economy, and almost none of it is behind your resort gate.

Coffee country, and cool air above the coast

The interior climbs fast. Above the resort strip there is coffee farming, hiking and genuinely cool air — the part of Jamaica that looks nothing like the brochure.

Why we love Seven Mile Beach

Seven Mile Beach in Negril is one of the most beautiful beaches we have ever visited. The water has always felt warm and comfortable during our stays—almost like bath water—and its calmness makes it especially relaxing.

I have even taken a beach float into the water directly from the shore and relaxed with hardly any waves.

From our stay

What the swim-up suite and butler service added to our stay

Our Sundowner swim-up suite included butler service, so these were not two separate upgrades for us. The swim-up room changed how we enjoyed the water, while our butlers took care of many of the small details throughout the stay.

The swim-up setting

We could step outside the room and enter the pool, then continue toward the beach without walking through the main resort.

There was space outside for two lounge chairs, and the quieter location made it especially peaceful in the morning and around sunset.

The butler service

Our butlers, Sean and Donato, brought breakfast to the room, surprised us with drinks on the beach and helped with the small things that made the stay feel easier.

For a special occasion, they decorated our bed with flowers, balloons and towel art. Those personal touches are what we remember most.

The photograph above is from an earlier stay in a different room. It is not the Sundowner swim-up suite.

What it changed for us

Together, the swim-up setting and butler service gave us more time to relax. We could enjoy breakfast outside, move easily between the room, pool and beach, and spend less time arranging the details ourselves.

Other room categories and services may work differently, so travelers should check the current room description before booking.

  • Sandals Negril currently lists 19 room categories across three service levels (Sandals Luxury, Club Sandals, Butler Elite) and two swim-up categories at different levels: the Sundowner Swim-up Beachfront One Bedroom Butler Suite, and the Bamboo Grove Swim-up Club Suite. A swim-up room at this resort therefore does not automatically include butler service. The operator lists no over-the-water accommodation at Sandals Negril.
  • Butler service at Sandals is tied to room level, not to the resort: categories at Butler Elite level carry a personal butler, while Club Sandals and Sandals Luxury categories do not. In the current Sandals Negril inventory every butler-serviced category has the word Butler in its name.

The detail

People book "Jamaica". They then spend the week in one of three places that have little in common beyond a coast road: Montego Bay, Negril, and Ocho Rios.

The area you pick shapes the week more than the resort does, and the second decision — what your rate actually covers — decides what the week costs once you are there.

When to go

Jamaica's official Atlantic hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November. Risk is not evenly spread across it: activity concentrates from mid-August to mid-October, with the statistical peak around 10 September.

Jamaica's drier, more reliable weather window is roughly December to April.

If your only possible travel window falls inside the peak of the storm season, the flexibility of your booking matters more than anything else on this page. Sort the cancellation terms first, then come back and choose an area.
