Why we kept coming back to Sandals Negril

Our first Sandals trip was in Negril. We returned for the beach, Jamaican food, butler service and the peaceful time we found there together.

Our first Sandals trip was a week at Sandals Negril. Since then, my wife and I have returned more than once, including two trips that we divided between Negril and an overwater stay in Montego Bay.

The beach, the Jamaican food and the service were all part of the reason we kept coming back. But what I remember most is much simpler: sitting on a quiet part of Seven Mile Beach with my wife, watching the sunset and listening to the waves.

Our first Sandals stay

Sandals Negril was where we experienced butler service for the first time. Having someone take care of the little details changed the way we relaxed on vacation.

On a later visit, our butlers were Sean and Donato. They were attentive without making the experience feel stiff. They surprised us with drinks on the beach, kept us laughing and found small ways to make the trip feel special.

Donato had a saying that still makes us smile: "It's very nice in paradise."

That personal attention is what we remember. It was not only about having meals delivered or beach chairs prepared. Sean and Donato brought their personalities to the experience.

The swim-up room

That later stay was five nights in a Sundowner Swim-up Beachfront One-Bedroom Butler Suite.

Inside, the suite had a king-size bed, a large soaking tub and a walk-in shower. The main reason we chose it, though, was the swim-up area behind the room.

Outside, we had room for two lounge chairs and floats that we could bring into the water. We could step from the room into the swim-up pool, move into a larger pool area and then walk straight over to the beach.

The butlers would prepare chairs under a palapa and leave a cooler with cold drinks, water and juice. We used that easy route from the room to the pool and beach often.

The section of beach near our room also felt quieter than some of the busier resort areas. At certain times, it might be only my wife and me with another couple or two nearby. That peace and privacy became one of the best parts of the stay.

The water and Seven Mile Beach

Negril has some of the best-feeling water I have experienced in the Caribbean. It was clear, calm and so warm that it sometimes felt like bathwater.

We enjoyed being able to spend the day near the room and pool, then walk only a short distance to that beautiful stretch of Seven Mile Beach.

Some of my favorite moments were at the end of the day. My wife and I could sit together, watch the sunset and listen to the waves without needing anything else to entertain us.

That serenity made us feel connected to Jamaica.

The Jamaican food

The Jamaican food was another reason the stay stood out. Sundowner Restaurant served some of the best Jamaican food we had during the trip.

The fried red snapper is the dish I remember most clearly. We also enjoyed curry goat, jerk chicken, oxtail, stew chicken and Jamaican rice.

Our butlers could bring Jamaican breakfast to the room when we wanted to stay in. Being able to start the morning slowly with breakfast delivered was one of those conveniences that made the vacation feel easy.

Part of a longer Jamaica tradition

Our Sandals trips gradually became part of our history together.

We first stayed at Sandals Negril for a week. When we returned, we stayed four nights and then spent four nights at Sandals Royal Caribbean in an Over-the-Water Private Island Butler Honeymoon Bungalow.

During that return stay, the room was decorated with towel art, flowers and balloons. It was one of those personal touches that made returning to Negril feel special.

Here is a look inside our room at Sandals Negril.

On a later visit, we stayed five nights in the Sundowner swim-up suite before continuing to Sandals Royal Caribbean for five nights in an Over-the-Water Private Island Butler Villa with Infinity Pool.

The Montego Bay property was still called Sandals Royal Caribbean during our stays. It has since been renamed Sandals Caribbean Cay.

We enjoyed the overwater experiences, but Negril had its own feeling. For us, it was the warm water, the Jamaican food, the quiet beach and the time together.

What stays with me

When I picture Sandals Negril, I do not first think about a room category or a list of amenities.

I picture my wife and me sitting on the beach as the sun went down, listening to the waves. It felt peaceful, private and completely connected to Jamaica.

That is why Negril remained special to us—and why we kept coming back.
